Spain sees Europe's 1st pipe-to-ship LNG bunkering
- Repsol and Enagas for first time in Europe supply vessel with LNG as fuel directly from regasification plant: Enagas

Spanish companies Repsol and Enagas have for the first time in Europe supplied a ship with liquefied natural gas (LNG) fuel directly from a regasification plant, Enagas announced Monday.

According to Enagas, this pioneering operation for Europe took place within the framework of the CORE LNG as a hive project, co-funded by the European Commission, to promote LNG in transport, particularly maritime transport.

The ship, the Damia Desgagnes, which is the first LNG-propelled asphalt tanker, received 370 cubic meters of LNG, according to the press release.

Repsol, as a bunker supplier, and Enagas, as an infrastructure manager, provided the technical and human resources required to perform the operation at the Enagas regasification plant in Cartagena, the press release said.

Enagas proclaimed that the pioneering operation in Europe, known as pipe-to-ship bunkering, lasted five hours and was carried out using flexible cryogenic transfer hoses connecting the ship directly to the terminal.

LNG is an eco-friendly fuel because it does not produce emissions of sulfur oxide (SOx) or particulate matter (PM), and substantially reduces emissions of CO2 and nitrogen oxides (NOx), which allows increasingly stringent environmental regulations and emission reduction targets to be met.

The LNG volumes involved means that the bunkering operation was the largest to have been performed to date in Spain and by Repsol, given that the largest amounts of up to 320 cubic meters were supplied in previous operations using tanker trucks, the press release said.

According to the press release, the Damia Desgagnes, which flies the Canadian flag, was built in Turkey with a length of 135 meters, a breadth of 35 meters and with a double hull.

The ship can be propelled using the three possible fuels: heavy fuel oil, marine diesel oil or LNG.
